GG4 (Gorilla Glue #4) — strain review

GG4 (sometimes labeled Gorilla Glue #4 or Original Glue) is the strain users reach for when they want effect that doesn't pretend. Bred by GG Strains in 2013 from a Chem's Sister × Sour Dubb × Chocolate Diesel cross, it became commercially famous when it swept multiple Cannabis Cup awards in 2014-2015. Among commercially-available flower, GG4 consistently tests at the top of the THCa range — 28%+ is normal, 32% appears in better batches. Our current batch tests at 30.4% THCa.

Strain profile

Strain bucket: Balanced hybrid leaning indica (~55/45) Lineage: Chem's Sister × Sour Dubb × Chocolate Diesel Dominant terpene: Caryophyllene with myrcene and limonene as near-equal supporting notes — heavy-tension-release profile Typical THCa range: 26-33%; our recent batches 28-32% Use time: Evening only — too potent for daytime functional use Flavor profile: Pungent pine, diesel undertones, earthy, slightly chocolate-sweet on exhale. One of the more aggressive flavor profiles in commercial cannabis.

Effects — what to expect

GG4 produces what users describe as a decisive heavy effect — onset 5-10 min, peak around 20-30 min. The 28%+ THCa combined with the caryophyllene-myrcene profile produces a body-soak that arrives faster and sits heavier than most premium hybrids. The strain earned the "Glue" name because users famously feel stuck to the couch within 30 minutes.

Duration: 3-4 hours of pronounced effects, with significant residual heaviness for another 1-2 hours.

What it's good for: significant pain, severe insomnia, end-of-week decompression, evenings when you want a "real" experience, post-physical-labor recovery.

What it's NOT good for: anything before late evening, anything requiring movement or decision-making, casual social settings (you'll be the quiet one in the corner).

How to dose GG4

For new or low-tolerance users:

  • Half a puff of 28%+ GG4. Wait 20 min. We mean it — GG4 at full puff dose for a new user is a recipe for an uncomfortable evening.
  • If half a puff isn't enough after 20 min, take another half. Don't take a full puff your first session.

For experienced users:

  • 1-2 puffs is the standard evening session. Three puffs is committing to 4+ hours of significant heaviness.
  • Excellent for sleep — 1 puff 30 min before bed reliably produces 6-8 hours of sleep for most users.

Avoid: morning use under any circumstances, combining with edibles (the duration overlap is brutal), driving anywhere within 6 hours of use.

Who should try GG4

Yes if: you specifically want maximum-potency commercial flower, you have significant pain or insomnia, or you're an experienced user who's hit a tolerance plateau on lower-THCa strains.

Maybe if: you're a moderate-tolerance user — start with half a puff, work up. Don't dive in.

Skip if: you're new to cannabis (start with something in the 22-25% range), or you want anything other than pronounced sedation.

Frequently asked questions

Why is GG4 so strong?

Two reasons: naturally high THCa expression in the genetics (28%+ is the floor, 32% is realistic), plus a synergistic terpene profile (caryophyllene + myrcene) that amplifies the perceived strength. Net result: GG4 at 28% feels stronger than most strains at 30%.

Why is it called "Gorilla Glue"?

The breeder's nickname for the strain came from the resin density — buds were so sticky with trichome resin that scissors actually got glued shut during trimming. The legal name was changed to GG4 after the Gorilla Glue adhesive company sued in 2017.

Is GG4 better for sleep than Northern Lights?

Different mechanism. Northern Lights produces a classic indica body-soak. GG4 produces a more decisive heavy sedation via higher THCa. Both work for sleep; GG4 hits harder, Northern Lights is more relaxing-feeling.

Will GG4 help me sleep all night?

Yes for most users — the duration is long enough (3-4 hours of effects + residual heaviness) that 1 puff at bedtime produces 6-8 hours of sleep. CBN tincture pairs well if you tend to wake at 3am.
